Hello and welcome to 6 Minute English from BBC Learning English. I'm Rob …
… and hello, I'm Finn.
Now Finn, there is nothing I like more than tucking into a juicy steak, munching on a hamburger or chewing on a nice piece of roast beef.
It does sound good, doesn't it? But meat eaters, like us, might need to think again about the amount we eat.
That's right because in the programme today we're discussing how eating meat can add to the problem of greenhouse gas.

Diabetics who live in poor areas in California are far more likely to suffer an amputation than are diabetics in wealthier neighborhoods. So finds an analysis in the journal Health Affairs. [Carl D. Stevens et al, Geographic Clustering Of Diabetic Lower-Extremity Amputations In Low-Income Regions Of California]
The study reveals that patients in low-income zip codes were up to 10 times more likely to lose a leg or foot than diabetic patients in more affluent zip codes. In poor areas like Compton, as many as 10.7 out of 1,000 diabetic adults ages 45 and older wound up losing a lower limb due to diabetes complications. In wealthier areas, including Malibu and Beverly Hills, no more than 1.5 diabetics per 1,000 lost a limb to the disease.
Fewer healthcare options for poorer patients and their providers may have contributed to the disparity, the researchers write.
The diabetes patients most at risk for amputations were male, older than 65, black and non-English speaking.
When blood sugar and other health metrics are carefully monitored and controlled, diabetes amputations are much more preventable. Otherwise, diabetes can lead to impaired circulation in the feet and nerve damage. Those conditions, in turn, can keep patients from noticing developing infections.

Type 1

You give me come here嗎?

Researchers in the Netherlands found that physical distance is a key factor in whether or not the bad behavior of bosses spreads to their employees.

In a series of studies, the researchers found that participants were more likely to treat others unfairly and act unethically when in the close proximity to their bosses.
✾ proximity --n.
Marriages in proximity of blood are forbidden by the law.
Their house is in close proximity to ours.

Scientists at the Rotterdam School of Management, led by Gijs van Houwelingen, created five experimental simulations to test the relationship between physical distance and office conduct.

'If someone kicks a dog right in front of you, it'll make you very mad,' van Houwelingen told Co.Design.

'But if you hear about someone somewhere in the world kicking a dog, you probably won't feel as mad about it.'

♬ Wedding announcements: The Catholic tradition of "posting the banns" required a couple to announce their wedding in print; this helped ensure they were not related.

♬ Fathers walking brides down the aisle: Because weddings used to be business transactions, fathers walked brides down the aisle to transfer ownership to grooms. Romantic!

♬ Bachelor parties: Originally held by Spartan soldiers, bachelor parties were wild fetes to kiss the single life goodbye.

♬ Best man: "Best" used to refer less to the friendship quality and more to the man's sword skills. Because you can never have enough backup support for a runaway bride.

♬ Ceremony: The bride stands to the left during Christian wedding ceremonies, because the groom needed to be ready to fight off suitors with his right hand.

♬ Ring placement: Engagement and wedding rings are worn on the fourth finger of the left hand, because ancient Greeks and Romans believed that a vein in that finger led directly to the heart.
