Today we’re talking about quite a controversial subject: the use of experimental drugs to treat disease. And, as always, you’ll learn some vocabulary – so you can talk about the topic too.

Experimental drugs are medicines which are still being tested – they haven’t yet been officially approved. And experimental drugs are a very hot topic with the recent cases of Ebola in West Africa.
實驗性藥物就是那些還在實驗中進行檢測的藥物——它們還未通過官方的批准。尤其在最近西非發生的伊波拉病毒事件中，關於實驗性藥物的討論更是甚囂塵上。
Ebola is caused by a virus for which there is no cure yet, and the mortality rate is high. The mortality rate is the proportion of people in a particular group who actually die of the disease.

Consciousness is one of the biggest mysteries of the brain. But maybe even more intriguing is what goes on when we lose consciousness—and how do we find our way back?

Now, researchers studying anesthetized rats have discovered a handful of activity patterns that may help mark the path to consciousness. The anesthetized brain is not actually quiet. It shows patterns of spontaneous activity that can change over time. But as the brain wakes, how do these random splashes of activity morph into the vigorous chatter of the conscious mind?

★ He lived his whole life as a struggling artist and didn't become famous until after his death.
作為藝術家，他一生貧困潦倒，直到死後才成名。
★ This scholarship supports disadvantaged youth who can't afford to pay for their education.

★ A new educational program has been set up for economically disadvantaged children.
